Two years on, and what an amazing journey

The International Journal of Noncommunicable Diseases (IJNCD), the official journal of the World NCD Federation, has now been published for 2 years. What began as a small, tentative step with the April–June 2016 issue under the overall leadership of Dr. Arun Chockalingam from the University of Toronto has now metamorphosed into a successful story, and the best is yet to come. In many ways, handling a new journal is like caring for a newborn baby in your family. With so many specialty peer-reviewed journals already available, it is always going to be a challenge to explore a niche corner that is not already crowded. Fortunately, the multidisciplinary nature of this journal that cuts across several different clinical and public health domains, coupled with the increasing realization about the importance of controlling NCD worldwide, has generated sufficient interest in academic circles to sustain and constantly improve this publication.
As the managing editor of this journal, I was privileged to have received the unconditional support of editorial board colleagues, researchers, and students, and our publishers. We have published research articles from several countries such as India, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Nepal, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. We also dedicated an entire issue recently to disseminate the discussions and outcomes from theFirst World NCD Congress held at Chandigarh (India) in November 2017. We also published new and globally relevant information such as the summary of the World Health Organization Global Report on Diabetes and observations from four large population-based cancer registries in India. All this would not have been possible in such a short period without the patronage of investigators and leaders who chose this medium to disseminate their research findings and experience, in preference to other more established journals. We hope that this trend continues.
We maintain a strong focus toward tackling NCDs under resource-constrained settings, and therefore opted to keep the journal “free” by not imposing any publication charges and yet making all articles openly accessible. We believe that this ensures that the knowledge base can percolate widely and hope to continue the same model in the future as well. We have tried to strive for quality throughout. Our manuscript reviewers are specialists in diverse fields, and our editorial board combines the expertise of globally renowned academicians and public health professionals from countries such as India, Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. They made sure that the research published in this journal maintained high standards and gave approval to publish only about two-thirds of the total manuscripts submitted for peer review in the last 2 years. Their commitment, coupled with the efforts of our support personnel, ensured that successive issues of the journal always got published on time without major delays. We hope to introduce some new sections in the journal soon and aim toward improving our readership base. The journal is already indexed with several abstracting partners such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure, EBSCO Publishing's Electronic Databases, Ex Libris – Primo Central, Google Scholar, Hinari, Infotrieve, Netherlands ISSN center, and ProQuest. We are hopeful of soon indexing the journal in some other prominent databases as well; some of these require regular and timely publication of issues for 2–3 years.
Overall, we have received generally a positive feedback for our efforts from several quarters. As relative newcomers, we may have occasionally erred, or not fully measured up to the expectations of the scientific community and our readership. We welcome suggestions on how to further strengthen the content, presentation, and management of the IJNCD. A journal is best judged by the scientific merit and impact of the articles it publishes. We urge all our readers and other researchers to contribute good scientific material for publication so that together we can foster useful evidence to combat the growing menace of NCDs. As we move ahead, we are confident that we will not only maintain, but rather improve the overall quality of the IJNCD.
